Wolves are an enigmatic and charismatic species surrounded in myth and for centuries they have been the subject of persecution. Grey wolves were once widespread across Europe, Asia and North America but, sadly, generations of persecution by humans have driven many subspecies to extinction. This conflict stemmed from hundreds of years of story-telling and miseducation. The grey wolf, however, is a very adaptable species and is repopulating much of its former range. Today, grey wolves commonly fall victim to poisoning and shooting by farmers in response to their predation on livestock. Human development also puts them at risk by causing habitat fragmentation, in turn increasing their vulnerability to illegal killings, disease and inbreeding. How your wolf adoption helps overseas The Aspinall Foundation has successfully released a group of Iberian wolves (a subspecies of the grey wolf) to a protected reserve in Portugal. Once widespread in this region, today it is thought that there are less than 3,000 remaining. The five females travelled from Port Lympne Reserve to their new home just two hours north of the capital city of Lisbon, a conservation and education project known as Grupo Lobo. Wolf pups are born blind and deaf, and must be cared for until they mature at around ten months of age. Wolves typically hunt within territories, ranging from 50 to 1,000 square miles. Social creatures, grey wolves have a complex communication system that involves body language, barking, growling, “dancing,” howling and scent making. Wolves are frequently mentioned in human folklore. In Roman mythology, the Wolf-Goddess Lupa finds Romulus and Remus, future founders of Rome, as infants and nurses them until a shepherd took them in. Wolves pose very little risk to human safety in Europe and North America - in fact, wolves are probably more afraid of you than you are of them.
