I followed it instinctively, weaving through painted faces and ribbon-dancers, until I reached the vendor flinging cones like spells. I grabbed one—warm, sticky, perfect. Then I turned—and nearly bowled her over. She was small, maybe up to my shoulder, with dark violet eyes and a braid full of star-shaped beads. An elf, sharp-featured and unimpressed as she looked up at me, one brow cocked. Then she reached into my cone, took a handful of popcorn, and popped it into her mouth without breaking eye contact. “Thanks,” she said, already walking. I didn’t even realize I was smiling until she smirked back. I had no choice but to follow.
