Birch Veneer Plywood - Prefinished One Side Description Our natural light tan birch plywood has a B face veneer with a veneer core. The back, or 4 side, can vary, but is typically a birch face. B4 veneers are a one-side-good guaranteed panel. This material works well for products where only one side will be shown. Rotary cut veneer is generally made by cutting a log into a continuous sheet while the log rotates on a central axis. This process yields a veneer with an attractive broad grain pattern that follows the annual growth rings of the wood. Veneer Core plywood typically consists of a center veneer and crossband veneers alternately layered and glued together, providing excellent weight bearing strength. Veneer core plywood also has great screw-hold ability. Veneer Core panels are lighter in weight and less dense than any other core type. Applications This is a North American product and like most softwood plywood, the edge may have some voids in it, so the edges are not typically left exposed. This plywood is sometimes called furniture-grade plywood, and although that term does not always correspond to a specific grade, one face is very nice and can be finished to result in a professional-quality surface. Like all plywood, the faces are graded for quality. Our birch veneer plywood is B4, which means the better side is grade B and the worse side is grade 4. The B side is very nice, with minimal knots or imperfections. The backside is usually very nice, but will usually have a few pin knots, some color variation, open knots, filled knots, veneer joints or seams. and perhaps patches. Typically you design your object such that the “4” face is on the backside or inside of an assembled object. As such, these birch veneer sheets are ideal for replacing furniture doors, sides and tops. Applied to another substrate, such as mdf, veneer sheets are a great option for casework, in place of more expensive solid wood. Prefinished Birch Veneer panels are also excellent choices for cabinetry, shelving and drawers. The prefinished side is smooth, glossy and easy to clean. Tips To ensure longevity, seal all exposed edges after completing project or build. Use a carbide tip with a high tooth count, and/or masking tape when cutting to avoid chip out or chipping the melamine surface. We also recommend scoring the surface prior to making final cut. Use carbide bits for drilling holes. Consider placing sacrificial material beneath your panel to help prevent blow out and chipping. Taping can also help. Laser Cutting Laser cutting birch veneer works beautifully, with most lab cutters cutting up to 1/4in and many cutting up to 1/2in or more. The laser does leave a dark charred edge. Most people leave it as is, but if you prefer, you can easily sand the edges to remove the charring. Laser cutting veneer opens up a multitude of projects and creative applications.
