The Fern Raku Ceramic Cremation Urn is hand crafted in the USA using real fern leaves. Our ceramic artist individually hand makes each urn, which is impressed with actual fern leaves and covered with a crackle glaze and then Raku fired, resulting in a natural-looking and unique cremation urn for your loved one. In Raku firing each cremation urn is taken from the kiln red hot, the molten glaze silken and glowing. Then it is placed in a bed of straw or leaves in an air-tight container. The dry plant material immediately bursts into flame, and the “reduction chamber” is sealed. The flame and the smoking oxygen-starved atmosphere transform the glaze surface, creating raku's unique, seemingly ancient colors and textures. Thus, each of our one-of-a-kind Raku-fired funeral urns is unique in the particulars of the design and glaze finish. Light Sensitivity Raku ceramics are sensitive to light. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the vibrant colors of the glaze to fade. This is due to the chemical reactions in the glazes that are affected by UV rays.
