May/June 1970 Ludwig 3 ply in Maple Thermogloss - 14x26, 10x14 , 16x18 Let's just say it and get it over with - JOHN HENRY BONHAM. This drum set was custom manufactured by Ludwig right before Led Zeppelin released their 3rd album. The sizes and finish were polarizing and new at the time (could argue it still is) but adopted by many of the hottest players for their unique tone. Arguably the best shells Ludwig ever made with the elusive Maple/Poplar/Maple configuration that gives more presence, attack, and clarity than their wrapped mahogany drums, while still possessing the richness and response of being 3 ply with reinforcement rings. Few of these kits survived because of the fragility of the Thermogloss Lacquer finish and the unique abuse large rock drums tend to get. This kit appears to be factory matched. The bass drum and floor tom sporting 1970 date stamps. The bass drum is virgin besides the cymbal arm (quite rare) and the tom is a left mounted 14" (meaning the badge faces the audience when positioned as the first tom, which is also quite rare). All of the hardware is original on these drums, including the custom ordered factory top & bottom mufflers and the original front bass drum head with script logo on the bottom and small block logo on top! The only "flaw" to the kit is that the badges are modern reproductions. They have no serial numbers but were installed well. All drums are in round with factory edges. These sound unreal -boisterous yes, but surprisingly musical. 14 x 26 - July 13th 1970. All original sans batter head. Features 20x large lugs, 20x T-rods & claws, 2x correct maple single ply hoops with no inlay channel, 2x 5/16" spur mounts and spurs, and a cymbal mount. Finish shows some light checking and a few scratches as expected, but overall very good. The finish is pretty unfaded. Some normal pedal rash. Interior is very clean. Chrome is good, with some light tarnish form dust and minor pitting on the lugs. 10 x 14 - No Date Stamp. All original sans heads. Features 12x large lugs, 12x correct tension rods, 2x triple flanged hoops, classic mount, and 2x mufflers. Very clean overall. Very little checking, and only a couple of minor marks in the lacquer. Darkest finish of the bunch. Clean Interior. Chrome shows general tarnish, with some light pitting on the lugs/hoops. 16 x 18 - May 19th 1970. All original sans heads. Features 16x large lugs, 16x correct tension rods, 2x triple flanged hoops, 3x leg mounts & correct legs, and 2x mufflers. Very clean overall. Lacquer shows little checking and very few marks at all. Lightest finish of the bunch. Clean Interior. Like the others, minor tarnish on all the chrome and light pitting on the lugs/hoops.
