A slow-crafted salve inspired by one of the most recognizable healing balms mentioned throughout Scripture. For years, during Bible study, I found myself deeply drawn to the Balm of Gilead — not just as symbolism, but as a real preparation used throughout the ancient world. That curiosity led me to researching poplar buds, the resinous spring buds traditionally associated with many historical Balm of Gilead preparations. The more I studied, the more stories I found. Accounts of poplar bud oils and salves being used for burns, wounds, sore muscles, joint discomfort, skin irritation, chest rubs, and more seemed almost exaggerated at first. But eventually I came across research published through the U.S. National Library of Medicine discussing the phytochemical and therapeutic uses of Populus nigra buds, and it affirmed much of the traditional folk use that had been passed down for generations. There is only a very small window to gather these buds each year. We forage them in the earliest spring, often just after the snow melts while the weather is still cold and the resin is thick and fragrant. The buds are then carefully dried and preserved so we can work with them throughout the year. Historically, balms served many purposes in the ancient world — from preservation and perfuming to soothing and protecting wounded skin. Scripture references balm several times, including in Genesis and Jeremiah, where it was understood as something deeply associated with healing. But the Balm of Gilead also carried symbolic meaning. Throughout Scripture, God showed Israel that temporary healing alone could never fully restore deeper wounds. Physical balms may soothe the body, but ultimate healing comes from the Great Physician.
