Germany, SS. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, with Hanger, by Gottlieb Hammesfahr

(SS Dienstdolch M33 mit Gehänge). A well-preserved SS Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the edges and tip. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “MEINE EHRE HEIßT TREUE” (“MY HONOUR IS LOYALTY) in Fraktur script, while the reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “GOTTLIEB HAMMESFAHR, SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s classic pyramid logo. The blade sits securely within a nickel silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. Stamped onto the reverse is a number “2” in Roman numerals, indicating distribution to Dresden district personnel. A single piece of lacquered black wood composes the handle grip, and is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, while the pommel is inset with a blackened and silvered SS insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. The dagger culminates in a nickel silver lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, which retains a rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is its original scabbard, constructed of a black anodized magnetic metal shaft with nickel silver fittings riveted to the tip and throat. The latter retains a loop for the accommodation of a hanger, which is included and consists of a blackened leather strap, adjusted with a functional magnetic metal buckle, in turn connecting to a functional spring clip which locks onto a blackened leather loop with an integral D-ring. The spring clip is maker marked with the logo of F.W. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid. The throat also retains an internal catch to firmly hold the dagger in place during storage. Some issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks to the blade with evidence of polishing, chips to both the obverse and reverse of the handle grip directly adjacent to the crossguards, and surface oxidation to the scabbard shaft with refurbishment of its overall finish. This early example remains in a very fine condition.
