Backed by general manager John Brodie (the former 49ers quarterback) and coached by John Ralston (1983–1984) then Charlie Sumner (1985), the Invaders made the playoffs in all three USFL seasons, going 9–9 in 1983, 7–11 in 1984, and a stellar 13–4–1 in 1985 after absorbing the Michigan Panthers' roster — including 1983 Championship MVP Bobby Hebert and All-League receiver Anthony Carter. The 1985 Bay Area Invaders advanced all the way to the USFL Championship Game, where they fell to the Baltimore Stars 28–24.
