After his study theology he joined the ecumenical monastic community, the Communauté de Taizé (Bourgogne France) in 1942. In this community he started working as a cook and builder. In 1949 Frère Daniel became a self taught potter. In 1952 he discovered the work of Philippe Lambercy and the two men joined to research the transformation of minerals in the firing process.
